Prison Cottage Industry Initiative

REHABILITATION THROUGH COTTAGE INDUSTRY SKILLS

This initiative is for assisting incarcerated citizens in becoming productive and generating income. Last year, our school principal took the high school students to visit a local city jail, and the seed of this idea was born. We met dozens of young women, in jail mostly for stealing, waiting for their time to be released. None of them were hardened criminals, all of them wanted better lives for themselves and for their families.

We began to teach them livelihood projects, making beautiful coasters from beads and twine, for selling at top retail stores. These women were only gentle, only thankful. It doesn’t take much—perhaps a couple of hours a week, to impart a skill that will change someone else’s life.
